Liam’s Journey into Game Development – A Career Dream Come True
When Liam received his Bootstraps scholarship in 2022, he already had a clear vision of his future. As a student at CHS, he discovered his passion for game development through the classes he took at Warren Tech; an experience that sparked his dream of becoming a video game programmer. Today, that dream is Liam’s reality.
After graduating high school, Liam enrolled at the University of Utah, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with an emphasis in Entertainment Arts and Engineering. He worked hard and was able to graduate one year early. Liam’s transition from high school to college was smoother than he expected. Living in the dorms for all three years and having a meal plan allowed him to focus on his studies.
It wasn’t all academics for Liam, however. He joined the game development club and participated in “game jams”, which are intense, fast-paced competitions where teams create a video game in just a couple of days. These experiences were not only fun and energizing but also critical for building his skills and a professional network. “They were super hectic, and super fun,” he said of the jams, and they could sometimes include up to 100 people. The club would also bring in speakers to help with resume building and networking.
Bootstraps played a role in making Liam’s journey possible. He used his scholarship to cover tuition and relied on his interest-free loan to help with housing and additional expenses. More importantly, the financial support gave him time and focus, which was invaluable to him. “It made paying for college much easier and allowed me to focus entirely on school instead of working,” he explained. That help made a huge difference to Liam, especially in a field as competitive as game development.
His dedication paid off. Liam graduated a full year ahead of schedule and within two months was living in Gainesville, Florida and had a position as a game programmer at Grove Street Games.
Now, his days are spent doing exactly what he once only dreamed of doing. His office and apartment are close to each other, so he is able to walk to work each morning. Each day is different for Liam as he collaborates with his team. Some days are spent coding new features, others testing gameplay, brainstorming improvements, fixing bugs, or refining details. He and his coworkers are always making something new, so it is always creative, challenging, and exciting work.
While he hasn’t yet released a game to the public, Liam is currently working on an unannounced project. Once the project is complete, it will represent the culmination of hard work, determination, and passion.
Throughout his journey, one constant source of support has been his mom. From helping him explore his interests early on to being there every step of the way, she has always been a steady and encouraging presence. She even helped Liam move to Florida.
Liam’s story is a powerful example of what happens when passion meets opportunity. Bootstraps is so proud of Liam and can’t wait to see where he goes in the world of video game development!
